In light of recent events in the US, it is important now more than ever to stand together and support those who have experienced complex trauma and have the strength to survive. It is especially important to support someone who deals with trauma on a day-to-day basis, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (referred to commonly and hereafter as AOC).
AOC has become one of the most prominent leaders in the United States since defeating former Representative Joseph Crowley in 2018. She is an influential voice in both city and national politics, though her positions have at times put her at odds with her party’s moderate members.
When speaking about her experience on January 6th 2021 at the attack on the US Capitol, “I’m a survivor of sexual assault,” AOC, said during an Instagram Live appearance, her voice shaking with emotion. “And I haven’t told many people that in my life. But when we go through trauma, trauma compounds on each other.”
